Deval Patrick has carved a dual path in politics and business. As governor for two terms, from 2007 to 2015, he helped Massachusetts pull out of a deep economic recession and recover from the Boston Marathon bombings, defended the right of same-sex couples to marry and established the state as a hub for life sciences. As an adviser to Bain Capital LP and now the Barack Obama-affiliated Vistria Group LP in his hometown of Chicago, he’s raised money and led investments in companies in the education and health-care sectors.

Patrick, 68, who briefly ran for president in 2020, seemed to float the idea of running again this summer if President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. Now an exuberant supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris, he sat down with Bloomberg Businessweek editor Brad Stone on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention.
