At the glamorous retail store downtown, immersive shopping and food are seamlessly woven together.

Photographer: Gieves Anderson/PrintempsWhen visitors to Printemps New York arrive at the luxe retail store, the first thing they might see isn’t a Rick Owens dress but a Haitian chocolate-filled pain au chocolat. The Paris flagship of this hotly anticipated retailer, which officially opens on March 21, is renowned for its designer garments, but in this landmark art deco building at 1 Wall Street in the Financial District, the operators are taking food just as seriously.
The eye-catching pastry is on display at Café Jalu, where the decor, with its canopylike kelly-green ceiling, yolk-yellow curtains and parlor tables, is as stylish as an awards gown. A glass case holds delicate guava and coconut Danish alongside the croissants. On the counter stands a polished silver La Marzocco coffee machine, so customers can browse ready-to-wear clothing from French label Saint James Atelier and Swedish brand Acne Studios with an espresso in hand.
