Uranium Producer Namibia Eyes Development of Nuclear Plant

Namibia will initiate talks on the possible development of a nuclear plant as it seeks to diversify its energy mix, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said.

“While I am not in a position to tell you when we will have a nuclear-energy power plant in Namibia, I can assure you that the discussions will certainly begin this financial year,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said in her first state-of-the-nation address to lawmakers in the capital, Windhoek, on Thursday. The southern African nation is the world’s third-largest uranium producer and needs to leverage its resources to bolster energy security, she added.
